Don't be calling these tracts "Apple Pie Hill." Shuster Tract- Charles F. Shuster began the development of Maple Shade with this tract. A revision was buying a segment of Spruce Ave which was owned by Christian Frech. Later, after the Orchards plan, there was the Shuster Extension which moved S. Forklanding Road over and "Old Forklanding Road" became Crawford Ave. The second tract was the Charles Zane tract. (German just like Shuster and Frech, Fahr and Klinger families. Maple Shade village began as a "German town." The third tract was the Maple Shade Land and Improvement Co.'s land along the north side of the railroad. Alexander Mecray was involved with them. They bought land from him even for the tract. He put in an artesian well to supply the homes with water. Then his land was made a subdivision, the Mecray Extension. That later became Maple Shade Farms, owned by Horace Roberts for Barlow & Co. Two early subdivisions, probably the next ones, were owned by Camden Attorney John F. Harned. They were the Orchards (most famous as the Levi Lippincott farm) and Maple Heights Farms along the south east (side w/ Mill Road School) which included Spruce, Maple, All the way including Beuna Vista. Behind Maple Heights and Maple Heights Farms, one on each side of S. Fellowship Road, past County Ave., near the water tower, was "Maple Shade Gardens" lots for sale in the mid 20s to later in the early 50s being Poplar Grove. Then after Forklanding on Mill Road School side is George Martin Tract 2. Crossing the road is George Martin Tract No. 1. Next, going towards Fellowship Road, is Birchwood Manor (1954 Birch Ave. homes), After the George Martin Tract No. 1, I would think, came the "Orchards Annex" to connect the two along Center Ave, past Frederick Ave. Back to Mill Road, past Forklanding up until Fellowship Road on the Main Street side is Maple Park subdivision. Again- Forget all about "Apple Pie Hill." Well that is a mixed subdivision report. It starts out naming the first subdivisions in town and then we go into the whole Mill Road area and past to show what the subdivisions are and they are not "Apple Pie Hill." I am planning on making a map 1907 Atlas style but say 1957ish and outline the subdivisions. -Dennis Weaver Maple Shade, NJ
